WREXHAM Council chiefs have welcomed train timetable changes which will bring major benefits to the local rail network.

December changes will see more direct services to North Wales, direct services to Birmingham International for the NEC and Airport and improved rail services to London.

Wrexham Council has also welcomed significant investment in new rolling stock for Wrexham and Shropshire Railways.

The company runs five trains a day each way between Wrexham and London Marylebone.

Virgin Trains also plan to run on a trial basis one train a day Monday to Friday from Wrexham to London Euston operated by modified Super Voyager train, with a first class service.

The Wrexham train will run at 125mph, with tilt operational over parts of the West Coast Main Line, between Crewe and London and reach the capital in a little over two and a half hours.

Councillor David Bithell, Wrexham council's lead member for environment and transport, said: “As part of improvements for the December timetable operated by Arriva Trains Wales, Wrexham & Shropshire and Virgin trains the December timetable will see major benefits to rail travel in Wrexham.”
