Notwithstanding the difficult conditions, which favoured a long ball game, the Bees were superior in most departments for much of the afternoon and a disconsolate Dragons boss could not hide his disappointment.

“You have good days and bad days and today was a bad day for us,” he said afterwards.

“I don’t think either side played particularly well and the conditions were poor. We gave away two very, very sloppy goals and we had three or four half chances that didn’t go in.

“But it was a day when nothing happened for us because we were poor. We’re disappointed with that because for a long time away from home we’ve been playing with three centre backs and looking strong.

“Our mentality in recent games to give nothing away has been strong and has actually seen us win one or two, but today we came here, tried to play 4-4-2 to try and get at them and it just didn’t happen.

“So it was pretty irritating, to say the least, that, although before the game we were all about winning, we seemed to be further away from winning than we generally wanted to be.”

Little admitted he had expected more from his team following last week’s hard-fought 2-1 win against Bury.

“I don’t think there was much between the sides in the conditions and both teams just reverted to getting the ball forward and trying to feed off little mistakes,” he added.

“They took advantage of two and we took advantage of none, so end of story really.

“But today could have gone either way. For me their first goal was decisive and we had a couple of little scrambles that ended up in the keeper’s hands. I can’t really remember them missing opportunities and the two chances they had they scored from.

“So there was not much between the sides, but it is disappointing as I said because we tried to play a certain way and it just hasn’t happened for us.

“Perhaps it doesn’t suit us with the current set-up away from home. Everyone, including myself, is aware of how important it is to win games and we’ve done that last week playing this at home.

“Today it just didn’t work, so it’s quite irritating and we’ll have to dust ourselves down because we’ve another game on Monday and we’ll go flat out to win that. We have still got 10 games to go and we’ll still try our very best to stay up.

“But we need to do better and we are all aware of that. No-one needs to tell us that we need to do better.

“I judge this performance against last week’s – when we played a similar formation – and they are just poles apart. I think at least at home we can play this way and convinced we can get at the opposition.

“Today wasn’t a great day for anyone to play football. I’m sure they would say the same. It was a difficult day to get the ball down and play.”

WREXHAM manager Brian Little said nothing less than victory would be good enough when the Dragons host struggling Dagenham & Redbridge today.

Little said his side would go “flat out to win” after Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Brentford left rock-bottom Wrexham still six points adrift of League Two safety.

And the Dragons boss warned his players there could be changes for future away games after the dismal showing at Griffin Park.

“Perhaps it doesn’t suit us with the current set-up away from home,” said Little after Saturday’s game, in which Wrexham employed a 4-4-2 system.

Defender Mike Williams misses today’s game as he is on Wales under-21 duty for Wednesday’s game in Bosnia.

He could be replaced by Carl Tremarco or Neil Taylor.
