THE world premiere of a play about the ‘father of the Paralympics’ will be performed at Whitby Hall Studio Theatre.

Set against the backdrop of the London 1948 Olympics, The Incredible Dr Guttmann tells the story of how one doctor revolutionised medical and social history by creating a games for disabled ex-servicemen and women.

The play focuses on the relationship between Guttmann and two young paraplegic patients.

Henry arrives at Stoke Mandeville Hospital from the battlefields of northern Europe, broken and with only six weeks to live.

Florence has had a riding accident and lost all hope. Their meeting with Dr Guttmann and his team will change their lives, and the lives of others like them.

Written by Nicholas McInerny, the performance of ‘The Incredible Dr Guttmann’ at Whitby Hall is part of the play’s world premiere tour, presented by Karen Simpson Productions. Karen founded Action Transport Theatre 25 years ago, so the company is delighted to welcome her back to Ellesmere Port.

She said: “Doctor Guttmann's incredible battle against prejudice, ignorance and indifference changed both lives and attitudes and his legacy continues to offer dignity, hope and accomplishment to millions of people around the world today.”

The Incredible Dr Guttmann comes to Whitby Hall Studio Theatre thanks to Cheshire Rural Touring Arts, and forms part of its Youth Live programme, which focuses on building audiences of young people aged 14-19.

The performance takes place at Whitby Hall Studio Theatre on Saturday, November 3 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £10 (£7 concessions) and are available by calling the box office on 0151 357 2120 or by emailing boxoffice@actiontransporttheatre.org
