WINSFORD town centre will get a long-awaited makeover after county planners gave renovation proposals the thumbs up last night, Thursday.

A meeting of Cheshire West and Chester Council’s strategic planning board voted in favour of plans submitted by Belfast-based Mar Properties to demolish derelict shops at Fountain Court and create up to 20 new retail units.

Mar is expected to knock down the old, dilapidated toilet block outside Winsford Cross to make room for new facilities, and also plans to make visual improvements to the centre’s exterior.

Cllr Charlie Parkinson said: “It’s great news for Winsford. It’s been a long, long road. We’ve been pressing for this for many years and we’re delighted that finally we’ll get some improvements.

“The councillors have done their work, and it’s now time for the developers to do their bit.”

The meeting was originally scheduled to take place in Ellesmere Port, was the venue was changed to Wyvern House after a request from Cllr Don Beckett, who feared holding the meeting 23 miles away from Winsford would stop residents having their say.
