MAYOR Cllr Nick Harris honoured Winsford war veteran Sam Dodd at Wyvern House to mark Armed Forces Day.
Mr Dodd volunteered for military service in 1940 at the age of 18. He was transferred from the Cheshire Youth Battalion to the King’s Liverpool Battalion and joined the Royal Engineers, where he became a Sapper dealing with bombs, mines and bridge building.
He was stationed in Africa when his regiment was sent to Salereno Beach in Italy after training for assault landing.
"I was very proud to receive the flag and it will be kept as a keepsake," said Mr Dodd, who turns 89 on August 1.
"I even asked why I was chosen and was told that the local British Legion thought I deserved it, simple as that.
"There ‘s not many of us old soldiers left and I am very proud to have received such an honour."
