A 58-YEAR-OLD man died after being crushed by a huge steel gate on Winsford Industrial Estate.

Cheshire Police’s major incident team and the Health and Safety Executive launched a joint investigation following the tragedy, at 8.50am on Friday.

Crush victim Bernard Rowson, an employee of S Cooper & Sons of Winsford, was taken to Leighton Hospital but he died as a result of his injuries later on Friday morning.

A second person, believed to be a workmate, was treated for shock by paramedics at the scene.

A police spokesperson said on Friday: “At just after 9.20am today a fatality occurred at an industrial premises on Road Three, Winsford Industrial Estate.

“The deceased is a man from the Congleton area. An investigation into the circumstances of the incident is taking place and the Health and Safety Executive have been informed.

“A coroner’s file will be prepared in due course.”

Once all the facts of the case have been gleaned, a full inquest will be held into the cause of the tragedy.

It is thought Mr Rowson was opening or shutting the newly installed gate, which came off its hinges and fell on top of him.

The building is owned by Thelwall Developments on Road One.

S Cooper & Sons, based on Nat Lane, had been leasing the premises on the corner of Road One and Road Three, where the accident occurred.
