POLICE raided a house in Winsford in search of drugs – and discovered 30 stolen bird eggs.

Officers executed a warrant in Newall Crescent on Monday morning and found the eggs along with an intact nest. The householders could now face prosecution under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

Sgt Danny Haddock, who co-ordinated the raid, said: “When we conduct warrants we generally expect to find drugs and paraphernalia. To find the eggs was a complete surprise and we’ll now be looking to take action.”

Under the 1981 Wildlife and Countryside Act, the illegal taking of an egg or nest of a wild bird is punishable by a prison sentence of up to six months, and a fine of up to £5,000.

PC Ross Hamilton, of Winsford Neighbourhood Policing Unit, added: “The 30 eggs we found all seem to be from different species of bird ranging from sparrow to swan.

““We’ve liaised with the force’s wildlife officer, who is in the process of trying to identify all the recovered eggs.”
