A BUDDING young artist has scooped a prize in a worldwide poster competition.

Each year, Lions clubs around the world sponsor the Lions International Peace Poster Contest in schools and youth groups.

This time 12-year-old Jenny Jones, a pupil at Whitby High School, showcased her artistic skills for the 2008-09 ‘Peace Begins With Me’ theme.

The Ellesmere Port Lions Club have encouraged schools to participate in this contest for the past 12 years.

After winning the local schools heat, Jenny’s poster was submitted to the next stage of the contest with the winners from more than 60 schools in North Wales, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Powis, Cheshire and Wirral.

Her Peace Poster was selected overall winner by the judges.

The contest aims to encourage young people worldwide to artistically express their visions of peace.

Jenny was presented with a £50 gift voucher and art books for her school to the value of £85 at the recent Lions Convention meeting.

Alan Joseph BEM, president of the Ellesmere Port Lions, said: “Jenny’s peace poster truly portrayed the theme of the contest and the staff of Whitby High School are to be congratulated.”

The theme for the 2009-2010 Peace Poster Contest is ‘The Power of Peace’. Students aged 11- 13 on November 15,2009, are eligible to participate.
