WREXHAM boss Dean Saunders has swooped for former Premier League centre-back Ashley Westwood.

The 32-year-old one-time Manchester United trainee has agreed a deal until the end of the year to become Saunders’ second signing since taking over at the Racecourse.

Westwood won the FA Youth Cup with the Old Trafford giants before going on to make more than 300 appearances for Crewe Alexandra, Bradford City, Sheffield Wednesday, Northampton Town, Chester City, Swindon Town and Port Vale.

Bridgnorth-born Westwood, who played with Saunders for Bradford in the top flight of English football, spent six months with the Dragons’ Blue Square Premier rivals Stevenage Borough last season.

He is expected to make his debut in Saturday’s trip to Mansfield Town (3pm).

Saunders, whose first capture was Wales Under 21s midfielder Joe Allen on loan from Swansea City, has left it up to his right-hand man Terry Darracott to complete the deal as he is away with Wales, for whom he is assistant to boss John Toshack.

Young Swansea striker Chad Bond and ex-Wrexham midfielder Dave Brammer have been training at Colliers Park.
