ASPIRING athletes from West Cheshire College set themselves an Olympic challenge – to match the time set by Dame Kelly Holmes over 500m.
Four sports students took part in a run up the college’s rotunda with the aim of beating one minute and 16.27 seconds – half the time of Kelly’s 1,000m British record of two minutes, 32.55 seconds.
Jordan Knox, 17, Danielle Erskine, 18, Adam Hall, 18, and Lauren Calvert, 17, all completed the 500m run in the time set by the double Olympic gold medallist when she visited the college last year.
Suzie Hobson, programme leader for sport and foundation degree in fitness and health, said: “Our students were really excited about taking part in the challenge and had been training for weeks.
“The students were thrilled to match the time set by Dame Kelly Holmes. Many of our sports students are aspiring athletes, so this was a great boost for them.”
The college is hosting several events to mark London 2012 in a bid to encourage more people to participate in sports.
These include visits from Olympians such as high jumper Ben Challenger, as well as taster sessions in handball, volleyball, table tennis and fencing.
