STAFF and students at West Cheshire College broke the record for the most Mohican haircuts in one room at the new Ellesmere Port campus.

The college’s hairdressing students were on hand on Friday to create the Mohicans to set a world record of 109 people with the hairstyle in one room in front of an adjudicator from the Guinness Book of World Records.

Jack Brockbank, an official Guinness World Record adjudicator who presented college principal Sara Mogel with the world record, said: “I think it was a fantastic way of getting all the students involved in a Guinness World Record attempt.

“The attempt is up there with one of the most unusual that I have adjudicated. Everybody has been a really good sport today, there has been a constant queue for Mohicans as people have been happy to get involved.”

Students and staff from the Ellesmere Port and Chester campuses gathered in the new rotunda to attempt to break the world record.

Nick Backstrom, programme leader for science, said: “I had my hair done as I wanted more of my students to get involved as I really wanted us to break the record and about six of my students also got a Mohican.”

Aiden Jones, 18, from Chester who is studying plumbing at the college, said: “I participated in the Mohican record attempt as I thought it would be good fun and all of my friends got involved.”

Other record-breaking attempts at the college last week were the most people dressed as a sunflower in one place at one time, the largest group of participants in an XBox Kinect zumba game and the highest pancake toss.

Sam Stevens, assistant manager of hospitality and catering and one of the organisers of the event said: “It is great that we set one world record and that is due to the dedication of the staff and students that we have here at the college.”
