WEST Cheshire College has joined forces with Chester FC for a new initiative to get young people interested in sports coaching.

The Sports Activity Leadership Project, funded by the European Social Fund and the Skills Funding Agency, covers a wide range of sports, including football, basketball, tennis and rugby, and is specifically for 16- to 18-year-olds who are not currently in education, employment or training.

As well as developing sports and coaching skills, the course will help young people improve their life skills and prepare them for further education or employment.

Phil Bickerstaff, sports tutor at West Cheshire College, said: “The course is great as it allows students to learn in a fun and proactive environment.

“As well as focusing on sport, it will increase their employability skills and will also include key skills such as health and safety and emergency first aid.”

He added: “The project will provide young people with a taste of the type of sports courses we offer here at the college.

“We hope the experience will encourage many of them to enrol on to a full-time course.”

The programme starts in mid-October at the Goals Soccer Centre in Chester and will run for two days a week for six weeks.
