THE former practice manager of a Wem family doctor group appeared before Shrewsbury Crown Court today (Monday) charged with fiddling more than £38,000 in expenses and salary payments.

Brenda Ward, 53, of Wemsbrook Road, was practice manager for the Wem and Prees Medical Practice at the time of the offences, which occurred between March 2005 and June 2007.

Miss Ward admitted five theft charges involving sums obtained from the practice to which she was not entitled.

They included sums for overtime payments and travelling expenses.

One charge involves the theft of more than £25,000 in spurious overtime payments.

The Recorder, Paul Farrer, QC, adjourned the case for pre-sentence and medical reports on Miss Ward, who was allowed unconditional bail in the meantime.

The Recorder told Miss Ward: “You have pleaded guilty to theft and a breach of trust involving a considerable sum. You must prepare yourself for an immediate sentence of imprisonment.”

He said sentence would take place during the week beginning February 11.
