WREXHAM'S Steve Roberts is hopeful he can add to his debut cap for Wales.

The 24-year-old defender marked his first appearance for his country with a late appearance in last Wednesday's 2-0 win over Hungary.

Roberts, a late call-up to John Toshack's squad, replaced Sunderland's Carl Robinson in injury time. And although he touched the ball just once before referee Charlie Richmond blew the final whistle, he said it was an enjoyable experience.

'It was very short but it was very sweet,' said Roberts, who has followed in his brother Neil's footsteps by becoming a full international.

'I'd started to get changed but then the boss changed his mind and pulled me back to the dugout and I thought that was it.

'But luckily enough he then gave me 30 seconds or whatever it was.

'I was chuffed just to get on to the pitch and, of course, it's my first cap. Although I might get some ribbing from the lads back at Wrexham, at least I've got one now and no-one can take that away from me.

'It's been an enjoyable week and an experience working with the senior squad.'

His club manager Denis Smith was delighted for Roberts. He said: 'We were all very happy for him to get his first cap and you could tell he enjoyed it.'

Meanwhile, Roberts' team-mate Craig Morgan was part of the Wales Under 21s side that lost 4-0 to Germany at the Racecourse last Tuesday.

Morgan, 19, was making his second appearance for the side now managed by ex-Dragons boss Brian Flynn.

Yet the youngster could do little to stop a powerful German side in a match played out in front of 5,055 fans - the largest attendance for a Welsh U21 match for 26 years.
