THE Russett School, Weaverham is hoping it has written its name in the record books after a recent charity fundraiser.

Pupils and staff at the special school on Middlehurst Avenue recently attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the most people simultaneously performing sign language to a song.

The youngsters were encouraged to take part to help them better understand what life is like for people who have problems communicating, and to help raise awareness of speech, language and communication impairments.

And at the same time they raised money for Afasic, a charity which helps young people with similar difficulties. In total 42 children and teachers gathered to sign along to Sunshine in my Heart, a song specially written for them by Alison Burns.

The school is now waiting verification of their record attempt.

Teacher Ann Bell said: “It’s fantastic that so many children took part in this event, and helping to raise awareness of these problems. We are delighted to be involved with such a worthy cause - and we hope we’ve set a new world record!”
