A POLICE complaints watchdog has been called in to supervise an investigation into the death of a father-of-three who crashed his bike into a lamppost in Weaverham.

Frank Drury, 27, was pronounced dead at Leighton Hospital on Sunday after suffering serious injuries in the crash at Northwich Road shortly after 3am the same day.

The pillion passenger on the 600cc Suzuki GSR bike, 33-year-old Leon Heron from Winsford, remains under observation at Leighton after suffering serious leg injuries. His condition was yesterday described as stable.

The Chronicle understands Mr Drury, who is believed to be a window cleaner of Caldy Way, Winsford, was being followed by police when the accident happened.

The case was immediately referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), the public body responsible for handling complaints made against police forces in England and Wales.

A police spokesman said: “Shortly after 3am on Sunday, July 13, a Cheshire Police patrol sighted a motorcycle being ridden in the Hartford area of Northwich. The motorcycle, with two people aboard, aroused the suspicions of the officers.

“However, before the officers could turn their vehicle around with the intention of signalling the motorcycle to stop, it was ridden off in the direction of Weaverham. A short time later the motorcyclist collided with a lamppost.”

Sgt Dave Harrison, of Northwich Specialist Investigation Unit, added: “It was referred to the IPCC on Sunday at the earliest opportunity. They are happy for Cheshire Police to be involved but they are overseeing the investigation of the incident.”

Floral tributes to Mr Drury now mark the spot where the collision occurred. One reads: “You were a good mate who won’t be forgotten.”

“R.I.P. my good mate. Sadly missed,” says another.

Police are appealing for anybody who witnessed the crash, or anyone with information, to call Sgt Harrison on 01244 614270.
