WREXHAM boss Denis Smith says his team have proved they should not be playing in League Two next season.

As the Mail was going to press, the Dragons were preparing for Tuesday night's crucial home clash with play-off chasing Brentford - a match they had to win to take their survival fight into the last game of the season at home to Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

With success over the Bees in the bag, a victory at the weekend, aligned with a defeat for Oldham Athletic and no better than a draw for Milton Keynes Dons, would see Wrexham safe - which would represent a remarkable achievement after they suffered a 10-point penalty at the hands of the Football League after going into administration in December.

Had Smith's men not been deducted the points, they would now be lying safely in 19th position.

The League's decision still riles the boss, who has also had to contend with a crippling injury list.

Smith said: 'We've already done enough in terms of staying up for as long we have and everyone in football knows if we do go down, we are not among the four worst teams in this division.

'Football teams should lose matches on the field, not off it.'

Wrexham's comprehensive 4-1 win at Stockport County on Saturday followed last Tuesday's 2-0 success at Port Vale.

Smith now describes every game as a cup final. And he says his players will be doing everything they can to top their LDV Vans Trophy triumph with League One survival.

He said: 'People will be writing us off once more, even though noone expected us to get to this stage and still be in with a chance of staying up.

'We'll live with that and all we can do is take the fight as far as we can.

'I love the thought of being involved in big games and they don't get much bigger than these.

'We want to make sure we push the season to the limit.'

Captain Darren Ferguson and Hector Sam reported knocks following the victory at County's Edgeley Park, although both are expected to play their part in the league finale.

And with Mark Jones back to full fitness, Smith has the rare luxury of an 18-man squad to choose from.

After Saturday's match with Huddersfield, holders Wrexham take on Swansea City in the FAW Premier Cup final at the Swans' Vetch Field.

Yet the game may have to be rescheduled to a later date if Kenny Jackett's men qualify for the League Two playoffs. nThe Wrexham AFC 'Player of the Season Awards' take place on Sunday at the Lion Quays on the A5 between Chirk and Oswestry.
