POLICE have warned Mid Cheshire consumers they could end up with more than they bargained for if they buy stolen goods.

A hefty fine and a spell behind bars could be the result.

Det Insp Pete Lawless , in charge of the Pro-active Policing Team in Winsford and Northwich, said: “Everyone loves a bargain. I don’t think the same can be said when it comes to a stint in jail. This is certainly not what people want, but I don’t think they realise this is exactly what they risk if they deal in stolen goods.

“Handling stolen goods is a serious offence. The fact the law states it carries a sentence of up to 14 years in prison reflects this. That’s why we take it so seriously and are working hard to reduce the problem.”

People who handle stolen goods are not only putting themselves at risk of police action, they can also be funding crime.
