THE UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is highlighting the dangers of setting off fireworks near airports.

Since 2000 fireworks have hit at least eight aircraft as they landed at UK airports. The pilots of a further 28 passenger jets reported fireworks exploding in close proximity, often dazzling crew during critical phases of flight.

All reported incidents happened in late October and early November.

Organisers of major public events featuring fireworks, lasers or searchlights must contact the CAA with details of their display so pilots flying over the area can be made aware of the potential risks.
