PROACTIVE volunteers from Veolia Environmental Services in Ellesmere Port have been rolling up their sleeves to spruce up a piece of neglected land.

Fourteen members of staff from Veolia gave up half a day to cut down overgrown grass, trim trees and remove weeds and nettles on Mill Lane, Neston.

The volunteers worked together to transform the unadopted land, which has been a blot on the landscape for some time.

Its overgrown weeds have been described as a ‘nuisance’ by residents from the area, with many concerned it was becoming a safety hazard.

Cllr Trish Derraugh of Neston Town Council said: “With the unusual weather pattern we have experienced this year, the weeds and vegetation have grown completely out of control and the residents were very concerned.”

Paul Elson, Veolia Environmental Services general manager at Ellesmere Port, added: “We take our corporate responsibility very seriously and actively encourage our staff to volunteer.

“We are committed to protecting the environment and activities like this mean we can go further together to enhance communities where we operate.”
