GREEN-FINGERED residents at an Ellesmere Port care home will join student volunteers to spruce up their garden.

Representatives from Whitby and Stanney College will team up with residents from Astbury Care Lodge in Great Sutton today to give the garden a facelift and plant a vegetable patch in a bid to start producing some home-grown treats.

The care home was selected by students to receive the makeover as part of social action project Summer of a Lifetime 2012.

The initiative gives youngsters the opportunity to develop fresh skills, meet new people and make a difference to their local community, as well as being challenged and having fun.

The initial idea of creating an allotment for older people was presented to the students by Astbury Lodge activities co-ordinator Susan Lewis and some of the residents.
