George Davies - Artist

GEORGE Davies is so far the youngest artist to appear in our virtual gallery.

At aged just seven, the year 3 Oldfield Primary School pupil is already proving to be a budding artists.

His mum Faye said: “Oldfield Primary has been great at encouraging the children to be creative in art and writing which George really likes too.

“George started drawing from about three and we always just had pencils and paper available for him to use (and now his sister too who loves painting). We have pictures everywhere including a collection of Thunderbirds 'book covers' he made when he was about four or five which he drew constantly until he got them right!

"He is a bit of a perfectionist and takes everything he does very seriously, he would like to go to art school when he grows up and be an artist. He also loves playing for his football team and is learning to play squash too.”

Faye added: “I did art at A level and and although I didn’t take it further, I have been able to encourage him and show him some basic techniques such as line drawing, shading and looking for the details, but now I just leave him alone because he likes to just get on with it - he learns really quickly. I just help by making sure all his pencils are sharp and supplying the paper! I think he finds drawing therapeutic and it's his hobby. We all encourage him in our family and so he always has a good collection of equipment to hand, and if we come across any good postcards or photographs we keep them for him to use as inspiration.”

Faye said: “He really likes the Impressionists especially Van Gogh, and also illustrations by Quentin Blake - so he has really taken to drawing in pen too.  He is doing well with water colour and experimenting with acrylics now. He loves recreating his favourite book covers such as Beast Quest and Harry Potter - he like the dramatic images, this helps him to learn about different styles of drawing and painting, but he also likes to do originals of landscapes, boats and people - especially his favourite Man City players in action!”

Faye added: “He is still young so he is still developing his own style by copying artwork - but he is doing much more original work these days and these ones are all his own.”
