Steff Worthington - Digital Artist

SELF-TAUGHT artist Steff Worthington is hoping the Chronicle’s virtual gallery will kick start his career.

The 43-year-old from Hoole, Chester, who is currently unemployed, is a digital artist and has worked all his life in customer service and admin until September this year.

“I worked at Chester and District Housing Trust but it came to the end of the contract and being unable to hire anyone permanently, the Trust sadly had to let a few of us go,” said Steff.

“I have always had an eye for the graphic design side of art and have been producing maps for book companies for about 10 years but over the past few years have found the confidence to express myself in other art forms,” he added.

“I have always been fascinated with maps and other realms of fantasy fiction from a very early age and have been inspired by the worlds of JRR Tolkien, HP Lovecraft, Ed Greenwood, CS Lewis and others.

“I've been drawing maps for nearly 20 years and have, in the past, mostly hand painted them. I am however currently enjoying using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop not only to draw maps but also continue to design and produce other artwork.

“Growing up in North Wales and Chester I've had the fortune of being raised in the area of Celtic tales of heroes both British & Roman and these have been my life long love. These tales and the legends of Arthur, Taliesin, Gawain  & Merlin have brought me to my current passion of maps and fantasy fiction but also made me a committed student of history during the so-called Dark Ages.”

Steff said: “You could say my art form is simply 'digital art' but I usually tell people I’m a map artist by trade/desire.Examples of my map work have seen print in a few different books from Miskatonic River Press & Chaosium, Inc.”

He added: “Sadly like so many others, I am currently unemployed but I hope to get into a studio or ground level at a publishing house."
