WITTON Albion boss Jim Vince blasted the Prescot Cables pitch after watching his side suffere only their third defeat of the season.
Vince said: “It is a joke and every club in the league knows it.
“Why are they in the league if they can’t maintain a pitch? Why does the league tolerate a pitch like that? They know what it is like but never do anything about it.
“And before anyone accuses me of sour grapes, we missed a penalty and three other chances, so we did not deserve to win. That’s a fact, but their pitch is atrocious and it has been like that for years.”
Witton still have an 11 point lead over Fleetwood and are 15 ahead of Gateshead, where they travel to next Wednesday.
Their rivals have games in hand, but Witton’s season enters its final quarter when Leek Town arrive at Wincham Park on Saturday.
Those missed chances at Prescot could mean new striker Kevin Rapley will be on the teamsheet.
Leek are again managed by former Northwich Vics boss Paul Ogden, who has made a string of new signings and includes ex-Witton favourite Carl Frost in his line-ip.
They almost held play-off possibles Buxton at the weekend and Vince expects them to prove better than their 20th place suggests.
Adam Morning has been released. Vince sprung his surprise after praising the player’s contribution to the recent victory over Whitby Town.
“He is a fantastic player and has great potential. But he turns up late, often hasn’t got the right kit and is generally unprofessional in attitude. As we enter such an important stage of the season I’d simply rather not have that,” said Vince.
