A SECURITY guard who has patrolled the Port Arcades shopping centre for 14 years has retired.

Deputy security manager Brian Williams has walked 28,043 miles during that time, assuring the safety and welfare of customers as well as protecting local businesses.

To put this feat into perspective, he has walked around the world with enough left for a quick jog to Moscow and back.

Back in May, Brian and colleague Dave Hickman saved the life of a young mother after she suffered an asthma attack.

He received a commendation for his bravery, to add to his collection of awards for his stalwart service and dedication, and has also been nominated in the 2008 Pioneer Your Champions awards.

Brian said: “I’ll miss the camaraderie with the lads. There is a lot of professionalism here at the Port Arcades. People don’t realise the amount of training we have to do.”

Port Arcades manager Les Lyon said: “Brian has been a great member of the team here and he will be very much missed.

“Mind you, after seeing the mileage that he has done since 1995, I think he pretty much deserves a rest now.”
