A WREXHAM Athletic Club veteran broke a world record when winning gold at the European Masters Championships.

Ian Broadhurst’s moment to remember at the Slovenia event came in the M50 4x400m relay, helping Great Britain to victory in 3.35.31mins.

Broadhurst also returned home with a 400m hurdles bronze while clubmate Amanda Wale went one better in taking W35 heptathlon silver.

Megan Rogers became the Under 17s Welsh heptathlon champion after finishing third at the England Athletics U17s & U15s Combined Events Championships in Birmingham.

In what was her first shot at the heptathlon, Megan set personal bests in the javelin (23.25m) and 800m (2.28.93mins).

Gina Paletta will compete for the Wales U20s women’s team at next month’s World Mountain Running Trophy after coming fourth in the junior women’s race at the English and Welsh selection races on Snowdon in 25.30, which made her the fastest Welshwoman.

Guest racer Anna Guest, of New Zealand, won the senior women’s in 45.46 while Charles Ashley was 48th, and the third-fastest M50, in the senior men’s in 77.05.

Robyn Purchase, representing Wales, was third in the women’s javelin with a throw of 38.15m at the U23s Home International in Derby.

Wrexham finish fifth in the Welsh Senior League Division One after coming fifth in the final match at Aberdare, a result achieved without a women’s team.

There were wins for Nik Mesney in the 100m A (11.2secs), Neil Edwards in the javelin A (39.21m), Neil Davies in the javelin B (30.62), Gawain Rogers in the long jump B (5.36) and the 4x100m (47.9secs) along with Steve Spires, Tom Cusworth and Mesney.

Edwards was also second in the 110m hurdles A (19.0), fourth in the discus A (27.51m) and fifth in the shot A (9.34), Davies second in the shot B (8.43), third in the discus B (22.44) and fifth in the 400m hurdles A (68.2secs), Rogers fourth in the high jump A (1.75m), Cusworth second in the 200m A (23.3secs), 400m A (52.4) and long jump A (5.80m) and Spires sixth in the 100m B (12.6secs) and 200m B (26.7).

Tom Csizmadia came third in the 400m hurdles B (71.5) and fourth in the triple jump B (9.63m), Chris Bailey third in the triple jump A (10.88), fourth in the 400m B (56.8secs) and sixth in the 800m A (2.10.3) and Ed Hughes third in the 800m B (2.34.4).

Bailey, Csizmadia, Rogers and Davies were third in the 4x400m relay (4.09.6).

Anthony Tibbetts was Wrexham’s fastest finisher in the Ponderosa Fell Race in 14th (29.24), followed by Ashley, the third-fastest M50 in 27th (31.26), and Mike Edwards, the second-fastest M65 in 75th (41.47), while Ian Carson was 179th in the Birchwood 10k Road Race in Warrington in 42.26.
