VANDALISM at a Rhosddu church has delayed work to improve its Sunday School.

Rhosddu Methodist Church members are holding a fundraising afternoon tea on Saturday, March 4 to try to raise money to begin work on the school.

They were about to begin asking for quotes to refurbish the school and kitchen in November when the church was attacked.

'The nursing home next door has an ornamental garden,' said church treasurer Brenda Roberts.

'At first small stones were thrown chipping the glass and making small holes.

'One Sunday I checked on the church and when I got there some large boulders had been forced through the windows and left in the church.

'I was horrified and we needed to board up the windows for a time.'

It was decided that the money collected to improve the Sunday School and kitchen should be spent on new windows and metal wire grilles to protect them.

'That work cost in the region of £1,000,' said Miss Roberts. 'It has meant we have had to put back our plans.

The community and our neighbours have been good, with the houses across the street watching out for the church but we have had no more trouble since November.

'This is a close-knit community and the incidents really upset people in Rhosddu.'

The church on Colliery Road raised £170 through a coffee morning at Regent Street Methodist Church last week and Rhosddu Methodists are hoping for the same success this week.

From 2.30pm on Saturday there will be afternoon tea with a cake stall and entry is £1.50.

There will also be Welsh entertainment with monologues and songs.

All are welcome and tickets are available from chapel members or by phoning 01978 354286 or 01978 350741.
