A pupil of Upton-by-Chester High School has been elected as one of Cheshire West’s Members of Youth Parliament until February 2016.

Members of Youth Parliament have the opportunity to use their voice to bring about social change. They sit on council committees, participate in consultations, and represent the views of young people on issues which affect residents.

Alias Buchanan, 15, was one of two candidates who polled the most votes when young people across the borough voted.

The results were announced by Steve Robinson, chief executive of Cheshire West and Chester Council, at a ceremony.

Alias said: “I am very proud to be elected and would like to thank everyone who voted for me. I am looking forward to being a voice for my peers.”

Congratulations also to Alias’ fellow Upton-by-Chester High School pupils Elinor Gray, 15, who also contested the Cheshire West seats, and Stella Dixon, 14, and Rebecca Clough, 15, who are youth members of the scrutiny committee.

Paula Dixon, headteacher at Upton-by-Chester High School, said: “I am so proud of both Alias and Elinor for standing for election, and to win one of the seats is a great achievement. It will be an inspiration for the rest of our students in school.”
