A history student from the University of Chester is playing on top of his game to support a cancer charity after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Robert Gray’s student life was turned upside down last May after he received the shocking news that the aching pains he had been experiencing were in fact cancer.

From diagnosis in May 2013, Rob, 21, quickly underwent surgery to remove the cancerous tumour and started chemotherapy treatment at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.

Not even a year on, Rob who is a member of CRAGS (Chester Roleplay and Gaming Society) – an association that involves all aspects of games from board and card games to traditional role playing games – is now playing his hand at fundraising to help support the hospital which helped him through his difficult times.

His first fundraising effort – a 36 hour gaming event – raised 800 for the charity. Now Rob is looking for more members to join the society to raise much needed funds.

He said: “My treatment at Clatterbridge started in June. Naturally, it was tough, but the staff are fantastic. They made the whole experience easier.

“I very quickly realised I was a lot stronger than I thought, and could cope with both the emotional rollercoaster of cancer along with the treatment and all it brings. I had good days and bad days, often feeling insecure and anxious that something may go wrong, but the staff at Clatterbridge helped me through everything. I decided I could beat it if I put my mind to it.

“For me Clatterbridge was the difference between me getting through a tough time and not being able to cope at all, they helped me more than I can ever say.

“I can’t thank my friends enough for helping me through 2013. Not only have they visited and supported me, they’re now fundraising for the charity that’s so special to me.

“Together, with the support of the university we are very proud that our first Clatterbridge event was such a success and we now have more planned over the coming months. I want to encourage University of Chester students to join us and help raise as much as possible for our local cancer treatment centre.

Jade Barrett, area fundraising manager at The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity said: “It has been a pleasure getting to know Rob and the CRAGS committee, we can’t thank them enough for their continued dedication in raising money for The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity.”
