UNION bosses yesterday said they would do all they could to try and stave off the closure of a factory with the loss of 200 jobs.

Air Products are looking to shut their Acrefair plant, near Wrexham, blaming the tough economic climate and a market shift to Asia and China to save cash.

Yesterday company bosses met union officials to discuss the situation.

Unite regional officer Graham Rogers said they have asked for costings off the company to see if they can come up with a package to save the factory.

“The management gave us a presentation and it is quite clear they are saying that costs are an integral part and market share is an integral part.

“At the moment we are not conceding anything.

“We want to scrutinise the figures to see if there is a way to keep the factory going.

“We want to explore all avenues,” he said.

Mr Rogers said they should get the figures next week to see if there is way to keep the plant, which manufactures gas products, going.

Yesterday company chiefs were keen to give reassurances that the possible closure of the Acrefair factory would not impact on another of the firm’s lines, the production of oxygen for patients across a wide region.

A spokeswoman said: “The company supplies gas and related equipment to a wide range of industries.

“The Acrefair plant manufactures and exports equipment for air separation, natural gas liquefaction and hydrogen purification for various industries.

“It is not part of the company’s healthcare business,” she stressed.

“This proposal in no way affects Air Products Healthcare service or the patients to whom the company provides oxygen.”
