WIDNES Cricket Club U11s continued their unbeaten run this season with a tense 12-run victory against Clitheroe in the quarter-finals of the Lancashire Cup.

Batting first, the young Beaconsfield Road outfit had to overcome a hostile Clitheroe attack and some enthusiastic fielding to post a score of 265.

This was thanks to some good shots from Mark Gibbons and a fine mid-innings partnership between Tom Keen and Daniel Weardon.

It looked ominous for Widnes as the Clitheroe openers piled on the runs at the start of their innings.

But they were pegged back by some accurate bowling from Alex Hewitt and Michael Byrne.

The fielding of Alex Buckley and Matthew Burns also stemmed the flow of boundaries.

Special mention must be given to wicket keeper Adam Edgar and Tom Edge, who kept his nerve during a tense final over to bowl the Widnes team to victory.

The Widnes team, already winners of the Merseyside Knockout Cup, go in search of their second piece of silverware this Friday (August 1).

They entertain New Brighton in the final of the Merseyside League Cup.
