TWO early-morning fires that broke out at a builders yard in the space of half an hour are being treated as suspicious.

Dangerous liquified petroleum cylinders had to be cooled nearby amid fears they would catch fire and explode at Principal Building Supplies in Station Road, Little Sutton, at about 3.15am on Friday, October 14.

Crews poured cool water over the cylinders with covering jets and monitored the temperature using a thermal imaging camera after the incident was reported.

A hose reel jet was used to fight the blaze in the shed, along with a ground monitor. Further seats of fire were found at the scene.

Less than 20 minutes later, a second fire on the same road was reported, involving a flat bed truck which was well alight.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet to put out the fire and cool the vehicle.

The causes of both fires are being investigated by Cheshire police.

Cheshire Constabulary spokeswoman Shelley Williams said: “Police are investigating after an arson attack at a builders yard in Ellesmere Port.

“The fire took hold of a shed and a flat bed lorry – both at the same builders yard on Station Road.

“Nobody was injured as a result of the fire.

“Police are exploring the circumstances of the incident and the cause of the fire is believed to be suspicious.

“Detectives are keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the area at the time, particularly any hauliers or drivers who may have noticed any suspicious activity in the area of Station Road, to contact Ellesmere Port CID on 0845 458 0000 quoting incident 122 October 14.”
