LANCE Corporal Richard Evans of the Band of the Coldstream Guards performed the opening fanfare at the Live 8 concert.

The 26-year-old, from Burton Green, Rossett, was 'privileged' to play the trumpet as part of the 12-strong band, for the fanfare.

L/Cpl Evans was overwhelmed by the occasion.

He said: 'It was phenomenal, I could die a happy man now. The atmosphere was absolutely amazing. Everyone in the band wanted to play really well, luckily we just didn't get the chance to be nervous.'

Being one of the performers, L/Cpl Evans was able to rub shoulders with the other stars appearing at Live8.

'Bob Geldof thanked us all. Bono spoke to me personally before I went on stage, commenting on how smart I looked, and wishing me all the best. I said - 'not as smart as you though'!'

He added: 'I also met Peter Kay and got an autograph from Jeremy Clarkson for my uncle. I also met David Beckham, David Walliams, Davina McCall, Adrian Edmondson and others.'

L/Cpl Evans attended St Peter's Primary School and Darland High School.

The talented musician has played the trumpet from an early age.

He started out in Rhos band, then joined Wrexham County Brass and Wind Band and the National Youth Brass band of Wales before he joined the Band of the Coldstream Guards, aged just 16.

Since enlisting he has travelled to Japan, Australia, America, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Majorca.

L/Cpl Evans said: 'We play at some amazing venues around the world from Buckingham Palace to Osaka Symphony Hall in Japan, but it's not often we can say that U2 will be our following act!'
