A WHITBY man who works nearby says the proposed £2m Gypsy and Traveller site would make his life a misery.

Last week we revealed how borough councillor Tommy Griffiths had pledged to “fight all the way” against controversial plans for 15 permanent pitches for caravans on Rushton’s Yard in New Bridges Road, Ellesmere Port.

A worker in the area, who does not wish to be named, contacted the Pioneer to back Cllr Griffiths’ stance and says he would support a campaign opposing the site if one was launched.

He said: “I’ve driven through that area on the way to work when the Travellers are there and been hit with stones and bricks, making me late.

“They’ve been all over the road and the mess they’ve left has been horrendous. A permanent site is going to be a nightmare.

“I can’t believe we’re giving in to them. This is the worst thing we could do, it’s going to make my life a misery.

“I’m not usually the kind of person who gets involved in a campaign but I hope there is one as I would support it.”

Earlier this month members of the council’s resources committee voted to endorse a bid to the Government for a 100% grant for the site.

In a report, head of the service (non-landlord) unit Tony Mousdale, said the camp would address the accommodation needs of Gypsies and Travellers in the borough.

During the meeting, Cllr Peter Shephard (Lab, Rivacre) said some Travellers “don’t help themselves” and the importance of keeping the new camp clean had to be stressed to them.

A decision on whether the grant has been successful is expected in November.
