POLICE issued travellers with eviction-style notices after they pitched up in Northwich.

Officers teamed up with borough council officials to shift the itinerants on, but the town’s top cop insists the situation was resolved “amicably”.

A swarm of cars and caravans set up camp last week on the Hadfield Road car park, but were warned they would be committing a criminal offence if they did not move by 1pm today.

Vale Royal Borough Council gave the travellers permission to stay until Sunday, but they were still sitting tight when the Chronicle went to press on Tuesday afternoon.

Insp Pete Minghella, of Northwich Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: “They said they were going to be moving on on Sunday, and the council were happy for them to stay until then. But they’ve obviously reneged on that and we invoked powers to move them on.

“We verbally served the notice upon them and returned within the hour with official paperwork. They agreed they would be gone by 1pm on Wednesday.

“If they don’t move on by then they actually commit an offence and their vehicles can be towed away. They have 24 hours to get everything together and clear up after themselves.”

He added: “It’s all very amicable. They agreed to move and they know the consequences if they don’t.”
