TRAINS up to 300ft long are to be used to trans-port timber from Aberystwyth to Kronospan's mill in Chirk.

The transport by rail is an experiment to help ease road traffic. The trial started in earnest on Tuesday when a train carrying eight lorry-loads of timber followed the 11.32am Sprinter passenger train out of Aberystwyth, bringing welcome relief to motorists so often caught behind timber lorries making the journey by road.

During the five-week trial there will be five 75-mile journeys a week, with some 4,500 tonnes of timber being transported, the equivalent of 180 lorry-loads of timber.
