THOUSANDS of people crowded into Chester’s amphitheatre to see Ellesmere Port’s Fireflies choir join in a nationwide musical spectacular.

More than 700 singers, dancers, musicians and giants performed an original anthem as a contribution to the UK’s BBC Music Nation weekend on Saturday, March 3.

Ladies’ choir Fireflies were joined by Chester’s A Handbag of Harmonies, whose director Matt Baker composed the piece with Helen Newall.

Matt said: “The anthem brought together the exuberance of the Handbags, the talent of the musicians, the passion of the dancers and the rousing voices of so many choirs, to create something quite wonderful.”

Live footage of the concert was broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and photographs and Facebook comments from Chester appeared on a BBC Music Nation blog throughout the day.

The event marked the countdown to the London 2012 Festival – the finale of the Cultural Olympiad.

Fireflies secretary Pat Tripney said: “Being part of such a huge community event was the best thing.”

The performance was attended by Lord Mayor of Chester Cllr Eleanor Johnson and MP Stephen Mosley.
