Cwmbran Town 2 Porthmadog 3

PORTHMADOG, whose season is ending in controversy and concern, because of events off the pitch, achieved their third straight win to guarantee mid-table comfort.

At the same time, the plight of their basement hosts Cwmbran worsened and they now look odds-on for the drop.

Yet, while Porthmadog should have won by a greater margin, they were hassled in the closing stages, when their desperate rivals piled on the pressure.

The Traeth club’s assistant manager, Viv Williams, said: "The players battled very well and we gained the result that we deserved but the chances were there for us to have scored several more goals."

"At least now with our having collected nine points out of nine in the past week, that has taken the worry away about the club’s future in the league.

"Cwmbran can gain some credit for never giving up and they made us a bit anxious towards the end".

Porthmadog found themselves in arrears after 11 minutes, when the home team’s Sam Small turned a shot past goalkeeper Richard Harvey, after fastening on to a long ball.

In counter-attacks, the visitors rued near misses by Clayton Blackmore, with a close-range header, and Rhys Roberts, with a shot following a corner.

Half time was near when Porthmadog secured an equaliser from Blackmore direct from a corner, the ball entering the net off the underside of the bar.

What appeared to be control came with two more Porthmadog goals in three minutes midway in the second half, from Marcus Orlik on 61 from 12 yards and Les Davies on 64 from close range.

But defiant Cwmbran closed up, when Geraint Goodridge got behind the defence to score from eight yards on 82 minutes, and that presented the away team with a nervy finish.
