RUNCORN’S Tesco shoppers are shunning disposable carrier bags and choosing permanent bags instead.
Disposable carrier bag use at the store in July 2008 was 40% lower than July 2006.
The supermarket giant says its customers have saved two billion carrier bags since the Green Clubcard Points scheme began in 2006.
The scheme rewards shoppers using a permanent bag with points that can be exchanged for goods when enough have been accumulated.
Production costs for carrier bags have risen in recent years in line with rising oil prices.
