MASON Burke passed his black belt grading with flying colours.
The 13-year-old Verdin High School pupil topped the scores when 50 karate enthusiasts from all over the country gathered at Weaverham Community Centre for the tests.
“To get the highest mark in the place took some doing,” said coach Paul Williams.
“Mason is very talented and has an exciting future in karate.”
Paul’s brother Barry’s students Nick Flaherty and Becky Clarke also had success.
Kingsmead-based Nick won his black belt, just like sons Matthew and Anthony before him. He has a third son, Nathan, due to complete a black belt set in about a year’s time.
International and World Cup fighter Becky Clarke, meanwhile, became a second Dan.
