A TEACHER has been able to research and implement an anti-bullying strategy thanks to a bursary grant scheme.
Trudy Marsden, a teacher at Hafod y Wern school, Wrexham, applied to the General Teaching Council for Wales (GTCW) for money to pay for a supply teacher to fill in for her for three days.
Those three days were spent at Gwenfro Junior School learning how to set up a school council and talking to teachers and pupils about the buddy system they had set up.
Now Trudy, who is the behaviour co-ordinator at Hafod y Wern, is setting up her own buddy system to combat bullying.
She is in the process of selecting 16 buddies out of 160 pupils to launch the programme.
'Pupils can put themselves forward as buddies and will be given training in how to support fellow pupils who have problems or are in need,' said Trudy.
'We intend to install buddy benches where pupils can go and speak to their buddies about any issues they may have.
'The buddies will then report back to the link teacher any problems which may have arisen during the week.
'I'm looking forward to implementing the scheme and, based on what I have seen at Gwenfro, it should be a resounding success.
'None of this would have been possible without the support of GTCW and staff at both schools.'
