YOUNGSTERS at Tarvin’s Sunshine Day Nursery made recycling their top topic this term.

The preschoolers have been getting ready for the festive season by making Christmas tree decorations using recycled items.

Parents were asked to have a rummage in their homes to see if they could find anything interesting and unusual that could be used to make some Yuletide ornaments.

Some of the items used to make the decorations included fir cones, jam tart foil trays, toilet rolls, dried pasta, egg boxes and lolly sticks.

And continuing with the sustainable theme, a real potted tree with roots has been used as the nursery’s Christmas tree so it can be put back into the garden after the festive season and reused next year.

The children have also been recycling old Christmas cards to make gift tags and using shredded office paper to make recycled paper which was then turned into Christmas cards.

Therese O’Hara, deputy manager at Sunshine Day Nursery, said: “Recycling is one of our topics this term and we thought it would be a lovely idea to link this in with Christmas.

“Both the parents and the children have taken on this project wholeheartedly. I’m delighted with the end result – our Christmas tree looks great and we have turned everyday items that might have ended up in the bin into beautiful handmade decorations.”
