WREXHAM manager Denis Smith, who yesterday lost out-of-contract Wales international Steve Roberts to Doncaster Rovers, has dismissed a bid by MK Dons to poach the services of teenage talent Craig Morgan.

Morgan, 19, has been offered a new deal at the Racecourse, although his agent last week said he was tempted by the prospect of more money to join Danny Wilson's League One outfit, but Smith insisted there would be no cut-price sales.

Morgan, a Wales under-21 international, is rated an outstanding prospect and will be joining up tomorrow with Wales manager John Toshack and his senior squad for a week-long training camp in Spain.

Smith said the fee offered by MK Dons to Wrexham's administrators was less than five figures, adding: "If they had added another couple of noughts we might have been in business.

"The administrators talk to me because this is my business and this is what I do.

"MK Dons are taking the mickey so they have got no chance."

And the Dragons' boss said he would be confident of being awarded a healthy fee if the Football League's transfer tribunal was called in to resolve the impasse.

"The lad has been with us since the age of nine so there has been a lot of development work put in by this club," he added.

"At the moment I have not given any thought to the prospect of Craig moving anywhere because I have got more important things to sort out."

High on that list will be a potential replacement for 25-year-old Roberts who, as anticipated, has said farewell to his hometown club and will join up with brother Neil at Belle Vue.

A disappointed Smith admitted that the uncertainty about Wrexham's future had obviously played its part in helping Roberts to come to his decision.

"I'm pretty sure he did not really want to leave because he is a Wrexham lad but Doncaster have obviously been able to talk to him over a period of time,' he said.. "If we'd been able to do the same back in December I don't think we would have had a problem but it was only last week that I could make him an offer.

"Steve likes to have an organised life, so it's understandable and I wish him all the best.

"He's gone about things in the right way and he's not kept me hanging around but it's ironic that Neil wanted to come back here when Wigan let him go earlier in the season and unfortunately we couldn't afford him."

The manager has yet to hear from any of the other players offered new terms but pointed out that of his main targets Juan Ugarte has returned home to Spain

for a few days while Trinidad international, Carlos Edwards, is on World Cup duty until June 7.

"I can't expect them to make decisions if they don't yet know what their plans are," he added..

"They all want more money - that's natural - and this is an opportunity for them to see what else is available.

"They have until June 21 to let me know but I would prefer to hear from them before that. However I won't wait beyond that date because I don't want another Lee Trundle situation, which put me out to hang and dry when he eventually decided to leave. If I don't hear from the players by June 21 I'll be going elsewhere."

* WREXHAM have arranged the first of their pre-season friendly matches at Witton Albion on Wednesday July 13, nine days after Smith's squad return to training.

"With no week in the Isle of Man to look forward to we will have to take a different approach to these pre-season matches," he said.. "But hopefully I'll be able to arrange an interesting and varied line-up for both players and supporters."
