WREXHAM Swimming Club sensation Lowri Tynan is within touching distance of a place at the World Championships.

Tynan will be part of the Great Britain party that jets out to Rome if she can repeat the performance she produced at the British Championships in the final team trials.

The 21-year-old from Coedpoeth powered to a personal best time of 1.09.83mins in finishing second in the semi-finals of the women’s 100m breaststroke at the Sheffield event. Tynan then passed the post in 1.10.26 in the final to secure silver.

Tynan’s success followed that of clubmate Luke Nixon at the Welsh Disability Championships in Swansea. Although he was competing alongside Paralympians, Nixon won an incredible five gold medals from five swims.

Wrexham were named the top team after dominating the North Wales Championships in Llandudno.

Tynan claimed eight gold medals, including one in the women’s 16 and over 100m freestyle in which club-mates Paige Davis was second and Catrin Harris third.

The club also enjoyed a 1-2-3 in the men’s 16 and over 200m individual medley, with David Tweedie just getting the better of Jonathon Cross and Ben Rollason.

Cross and Tweedie shared 15 gold medals, while there were also victories for Bethan Paine, Rollason, James Nicholls, Harris, Cara Lowndes and star performer James Wilson, who finished first in nine of his 11 swims.
