More than 500 fans gathered at Hickory’s Smokehouse on the banks of the River Dee for what must be one of the biggest Super Bowl parties this side of the pond.

American football fans were joined by the city’s own Chester Romans team, along with a host of Hickory’s regulars to join in the razzmatazz for the USA’s most glittering sporting event.

The whole restaurant was transformed into a traditional ‘tailgate’ style party with a purpose-built marquee, giant blow-up football characters, traditional foam fingers and a host of traditional treats including waffle dogs, buckets of ribs and wings and endless supplies of traditional American craft beers.

Guests, who watched the action on more than 25 screens across the venue, saw favourites the New England Patriots steal victory from the Seattle Seahawks in the final few seconds of the game.

Staff were decked in a variety of all-American outfits and the high octane approach was a real match for the exciting on-screen action which included a show-stopping half time performance by Katy Perry.

Hickory’s owner and the event’s founder, Jason Bligh, said: “Everyone had an amazing night. The Americans put on such an incredible show and we wanted our celebrations to feel as authentic as possible.

“American Football is enjoying a surge of popularity here in the UK and, although we have been running the event for five years now, this has been our biggest yet.

“I have to say it almost felt as though we were on American soil – the atmosphere was electric.”
