EX-POLICE guitarist Andy Summers is the big name at the 6th North Wales International Jazz Guitar Festival in Wrexham.

The festival takes place from Wednesday, August 17 to Saturday 20 and will see jazz guitar gigs taking place in the Memorial Hall (evenings) and Yales Cafe Bar (afternoons).

On Wednesday evening the festival opens with gypsy-style player Bireli Lagrene, Corey Christiansen and Ned Boynton.

On Thursday there is an afternoon session featuring the cream of young jazz guitar talent before an evening performance by US guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli along with Diana Krall Quartet member Anthony Wilson and Ned Boynton.

On Friday the afternoon belongs to local outfit the Chris Walker/Les Bolger Quintet before Andy Summers' evening show.

Summers has built a great reputation as a pioneer of contemporary jazz and earlier this year released The X Tracks, which features collaborations with former bandmate Sting and Blondie singer Debbie Harry.

He will perform with internationally renowned artists Jim Mullen, Trefor Owen, Roy Sainsbury, Tony Marshall and James Taylor.

The festival will be rounded off on Saturday by Wilson and Christiansen at Yales, an outdoor concert in Bellevue Park by Gary Boyle and the Nat Birchall Quartet in the afternoon, and an all-star jam at the Crown Inn in Llay that evening.

Tickets for the evening gigs are: Memorial Hall, Wednesday and Friday - £15 (£12 concessions), Thursday - £12 (£10 concessions), Crown Inn, Llay, Saturday - £6 (£5 concessions).

Afternoon entry to Yales is £2, refundable if you purchase food.

On Saturday a non-refundable entry of £6 (£5 concessions) will be charged. The Bellevue Park gig is free. Book on 01745 812260 or 01978 292015.
