MORE than 400 schoolchildren from Ellesmere Port and Chester enjoyed a day of fun and innovative science activities at the Big Bang event at West Cheshire College.
The college was one of just 10 colleges nationwide to be selected to host the Welcome to the Future event, to make science more accessible for primary and secondary school children in the region.
Exhibitors at the event included Dr Guy Billing, who helped to explain how our brain works; a journey through the science fiction world of Doctor Who; a visit from Auriga Astronomy Planetarium to learn about stars and planets; plus a guide to search for alien life and to find out how they live.
Liz Beardmore, assistant manager for STEM development at West Cheshire College, said: “The day was an outstanding success as we had 477 students plus their teachers attending.
“I hope the event will encourage more students to consider studying science in the future. We are planning to host more events like this in the future as I believe it is essential to get more children interested in science.”
Students also had the opportunity to win an iPad for answering questions throughout the day and eight-year-old Carter Parmenter, from Abbey Gate School in Hoole, was named the winner.
Mark Brake, of the Doctor Who Experience, an exhibitor on the day, said: “It was great being involved in the Big Bang event at the college. All of the students really enjoyed the day and were really enthusiastic about all the activities.
“It was great to see all of the students getting so excited about science and I hope this will encourage more young people to study science in the future.”
