YALE College has launched the first Golf Development Centre in North Wales.
And the talented students are already proving to be a force to be reckoned with on the green.
Golf Development students are given the opportunity to combine academic programmes of study with personal golf development from the professional Clays Golf Club in Wrexham.
Nine students have taken up places in the first year and are eager to improve their golf at the same time as achieving academic success. The students will also be involved in coaching golf to children at local primary schools.
The students started off the year in winning form at the Welsh Colleges Golf Competition, with the A-team (Josh Green, Tom King, Matthew Weston and Sam Burrows) winning first place with a nett score of 210. Josh Green finished third overall in the individual event.
The winning four will go on to represent the Welsh region at the British Colleges National Finals at Loughborough in April 2006.
They have also competed in the Welsh Colleges' Golf Academies Open at Wentwood Hills, the famous Celtic Manor course that has played host to four Wales Open tournaments and is being redeveloped in preparation for the 2010 Ryder Cup.
Viv Davies, assistant director of faculty for leisure, lifestyle and sport, has launched the centre and said: 'Winning the Welsh Colleges Golf Competition is an excellent achievement for the students.
'And the chance to tee up on the 2010 Ryder Cup course was a tremendous opportunity for them.
'They performed very well on the challenging course, with two students finishing in the top three places: Tom King finished second with a score of 40 and Andrew Swarbrick was third on 36.'
