£4,000 benefits fraud

A SINGLE mum blamed laziness for a fraudulent benefit claim worth more than £4,000.

Julie Smith, 43, of Ford Court, Winsford, was paid income support totalling £4,242,28 despite the fact she had started work.

Michael Whitty, defending, said Smith’s actions “could be attributed to naivety rather than trying to cheat the system”.

She appeared at Chester Magistrates Court on Monday when she was fined £150 and ordered to pay £150 costs. She will also be required to repay the amount in full to the Department for Work and Pensions.
