MID Cheshire provides 10 of the 35 strong Cheshire squad for the English Schools Athletics Championships at Gateshead’s International Stadium on Friday and Saturday.
It is the biggest day in the school sports calendar, will attract crowds of about 4,000 and the Mid Cheshire contingent has several hopes of a medal.
Not least is Grange junior 800m runner Sam Dykes, whose Cheshire title time of 2:00.80 was good enough for a bronze at last year’s event.
Mid Cheshire College senior 2,000m steeplechaser Lawrence Walker, Sir John Deane’s College duo 100m sprinter Morgan Brown and Heather Timmins, 3000m, ought to fancy their chances too.
Kathy Stringer (Hartford) contested the inters 800m last year and has qualified again and will be aiming for a place in the final at least.
Richard Tranter (St Nicholas) and Weaverham’s Mike Koral are team-mates and rivals in the inters triple jump while the finals beckon at least for Peter Morgan (Grange), who goes in the senior 400m, Megan Huxley (Middlewich) in the junior 1500m and Natasha Stevens (Hartford) in the inters 300m hurdles.
Luke Johnson and Mike Koral recorded six personal bests each out of eight events to help Cheshire Schools to a major athletics final.
The two Weaverham High School students excelled at the North West Combined Events Championships at the Bebington Oval and now Cheshire’s intermediate team of four look forward to contesting the national title at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham in September.
It is rare for one school to provide two members of the team.
